Vehicle Overview
The all-new Range Rover Evoque marks a shift of sorts for Land Rover. The automaker is known primarily in the U.S. for building boxy, capable SUVs, but the Evoque is a decidedly sportier and sleeker luxury crossover aimed at models like the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60. Offered in two- and four-door body styles, the Evoque hits dealerships in fall 2011.

Exterior
The new Evoque looks quite a bit like Land Rover's LRX concept from a few years ago. It's an athletic-looking crossover that has quite a bit of presence despite its relatively small footprint.

The Evoque is wide and low-slung — something many Land Rovers aren't — but its front-end styling still makes it instantly recognizable as a Land Rover. Available exterior features include:
  • Panoramic moonroof
  • Xenon adaptive headlights
  • Power liftgate
  • Heated windshield
  • 20-inch wheels
  • Contrasting roof colors
Interior
Like in Land Rover's high-dollar Range Rover, the design of the Evoque's center console gives the impression that it's extending into the upper reaches of the dashboard. Premium materials are used, and there's a twist-knob gear selector instead of a traditional shifter. Available interior features include:
  • 8-inch touch-screen
  • Navigation system
  • Dual-zone automatic air conditioning
  • Premium Meridian audio system
  • Surround Camera System with five cameras
Under the Hood
The Evoque is powered by a 240-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that teams with a six-speed automatic transmission. Power is routed to the road through a permanent all-wheel-drive system, and Land Rover's Terrain Response technology provides enhanced off-road capability.

Safety
Safety features include:
  • Antilock brakes
  • Electronic stability system with Roll Stability Control
  • Corner Brake Control for greater braking stability when cornering
  • Side-impact and side curtain airbags
  • Front knee airbags

Vehicle Overview
The A4 was last redesigned for the 2009 model year and comes in sedan and wagon (called Avant) body styles. Audi also offers a performance version of the sedan as the S4, covered in a separate report in the Research section. The five-seat A4 faces competition from the BMW 3 Series, Cadillac CTS, Infiniti G37 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
New for 2012
Premium versions of the A4 add 10-spoke 17-inch wheels, automatic headlights and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Premium Plus models feature S line exterior styling, 10-spoke 18-inch wheels, a memory feature for the driver's seat and a power liftgate on wagon body styles. Meanwhile, the top-of-the-line Prestige gains adaptive headlights and a blind spot warning system.
Exterior
The A4's styling bears a family resemblance to the larger A6. The sedan has a small spoiler integrated into the trunk lid, and two circular exhaust outlets poke out from below the rear bumper. Exterior features include:
  • Standard glass sunroof
  • Standard 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Available 18- or 19-inch wheels
  • Available swiveling headlights
  • Available xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights
  • Available LED daytime running lights

Interior
Like other Audi models, the A4 has adopted the German automaker's Multi Media Interface. MMI is a knob-based control system that shares similarities with BMW's iDrive and Mercedes-Benz's Comand system. It controls functions such as the navigation system, audio system and vehicle settings. In the A4 and other Audis, MMI features a knob controller and buttons on the center console for navigating menus and making selections from a dashboard screen. The available navigation system includes HD radio. Interior features include:
  • Standard automatic air conditioning
  • Standard leather upholstery
  • Available upgraded stereo
  • Available keyless entry and start
  • Available Bluetooth connectivity and iPod cable

Under the Hood
All models have a turbocharged 2.0-liter gas four-cylinder. The base sedan comes with front-wheel drive and Audi's multitronic continuously variable automatic transmission. Other sedans have Quattro all-wheel drive and a choice of a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. The Avant wagon comes only with all-wheel drive and the automatic transmission.

Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system in this application has a torque split of 40/60, front to rear. This rear-biased design gives the A4 dynamics that are closer to a rear-wheel-drive car in addition to enhanced traction on both dry and slippery surfaces. Mechanical features include:
  • 211-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 258 pounds-feet of torque
  • Uses premium gas
  • Available Quattro all-wheel drive

Safety
Available safety features include Audi Side Assist, which informs the driver when another vehicle is next to the A4, and a backup camera. Rear side-impact airbags also are available. Standard safety features include:
  • Four-wheel-disc antilock brakes with brake assist
  • Front-seat side-impact airbags
  • Front and rear side curtain airbags
  • Electronic stability system with traction control

Vehicle Overview
Just three model years after a full redesign — relatively soon — Acura has restyled its 2012 TL midsize sedan to address objections to the "aggressive styling [that] may have been a bit too bold in the evolving market," said Jeff Conrad, vice president of sales for Acura. The car also gets a new transmission, higher mileage and numerous interior upgrades.

The TL comes in front- and all-wheel-drive versions and in a base model or with the optional Technology or Advance option packages. It competes with the Audi A6, Lexus ES 350, Lincoln MKZ and Volvo S60 and S80.
Exterior
Acura reduced the silver shield grille and added a horizontal crease in the bumper that makes the silver segment seem smaller still. The front overhang is shorter, and the headlights and turn-signal lights have been revised. Around back, Acura removed the chrome-under-glass look of the taillights and shaved some mass out of the bumper below them to make the car less blocky. The license plate position has also migrated, and the silver trim on the trunklid has been downsized.

Seventeen-inch, seven-spoke alloy wheels and all-season tires are standard. The TL with Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive has 18-inch, five-spoke alloys with lower-profile tires. When equipped with the Advance Package, the TL's wheels are 19-inch, split-five-spoke aluminum rims with performance all-season tires.
Interior
The TL's well-appointed interior gets some upgrades for 2012, including a brighter display and more expansive navigation map coverage in the optional Technology Package, along with a faster USB port. The package includes real-time traffic with automatic rerouting, weather information and a premium stereo.

A new optional Advance Package includes heated and cooled front seats.
Under the Hood
Acura has replaced the 2011 TL's five-speed automatic transmission with a six-speed, which the company says improves acceleration without sacrificing efficiency. It uses rev-matching for smooth downshifts, even across two gears. A manual mode remains, and buyers can also opt for a conventional six-speed manual transmission — the stick-and-clutch-pedal variety — in all-wheel-drive versions.

The base engine is a 280-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6, and all-wheel drive teams with a 305-hp, 3.7-liter V-6.

Gas mileage has improved. Aerodynamic improvements, reduced engine friction and the new six-speed collaborate to increase the 3.5-liter engine's highway mileage to 29 mpg from 26 mpg in the 2011. The city rating has increased 2 mpg to 20 mpg. Premium gas is required.
Safety
The TL has front airbags and side curtains. Also standard are front-seat-mounted side-impact torso airbags, which the rear seats don't offer. As in 2011, and now required of all 2012 models sold in the U.S., the TL has antilock brakes and an electronic stability system.

The Advance Package adds a blind spot warning system.

2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 5

Vehicle Overview
With the launch of the ActiveHybrid 5, BMW adds a full hybrid to its range of midsize luxury cars. The five-seat sedan can operate at speeds up to 37 mph on electric power alone, but the car retains typical BMW performance; it can go from zero to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds, according to BMW. Competitors include the Infiniti M35h and Lexus GS 450h hybrids. It hits dealerships in spring 2012.
Exterior
Subtle styling cues differentiate the ActiveHybrid 5 from the regular 5 Series. There are logos on the rear roof pillars, galvanized slats in the twin-kidney grille, and matte chrome tailpipes. The sedan comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, but aerodynamic 18-inch alloy wheels are optional. It also gets an exclusive paint color: Bluewater Metallic.
Interior
Differences in the cabin are similarly minimal. The doorsill plates have the ActiveHybrid 5 logo, and there's a logo plate on the center console, too. A navigation system and four-zone climate control are standard, and the ActiveHybrid 5 can have most of the features available in the regular 5 Series. Optional features include ventilated seats, premium stereo and backseat entertainment.
Under the Hood
The ActiveHybrid 5's hybrid drivetrain consists of a 306-horsepower, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission with an integrated electric motor that makes 55 hp, and a lithium-ion battery pack. Total system output is 340 hp. The battery is located between the rear wheel arches in the trunk, resulting in less cargo space than the regular 5 Series.

In addition to driving on electric power at speeds up to 37 mph, the ActiveHybrid 5 can go about 2.5 miles on electric power alone at an average speed of 22 mph with a sufficiently charged battery, according to BMW. The electric motor can provide a power boost when accelerating, and the gas engine can shut down when coasting at speeds up to 100 mph.

The hybrid drivetrain also works with the navigation system, customizing its operation based on upcoming driving conditions. If hilly terrain is on the horizon, for instance, it can provide supplemental electric acceleration beforehand knowing the battery has a chance to recharge on descents.

The hybrid's Driving Experience Control includes an Eco Pro mode in addition to Comfort and Sport modes. Eco Pro promotes fuel efficiency by increasing the time spent in the car's all-electric mode.

Safety
Safety features include antilock brakes, an electronic stability system, side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags. Optional features include parking sensors, a backup camera, the Surround View system, adaptive headlights, a lane departure warning system and night vision with pedestrian detection.

Vehicle Overview
Buick brings back one of its well-known nameplates — Regal — for its newest entry-luxury midsize sedan. Based on the Opel Insignia from Europe, the Regal has a striking resemblance to that model. It's offered with a choice of four-cylinder engines, one of which is turbocharged, and its  competitors include the Volkswagen Passat and Acura TSX. The Regal seats up to five people, and high-performance GS and mild-hybrid eAssist versions join the 2012 lineup.
(Skip to details on the: Regal GSRegal eAssist)
New for 2012
The Regal features Buick's upcoming IntelliLink multimedia system, which has a 7-inch touch-screen and uses Bluetooth or a USB port to play internet radio from a smartphone. Design changes include new portholes on the hood and a black chrome waterfall grille. In addition, the Regal's 2.4-liter four-cylinder can now run on E85 ethanol. The power side mirrors are heated and have integrated turn signals, and the bi-xenon high-intensity-discharge headlamps gain blue rings. Newly available options include remote start, a universal garage door opener and push-button start.
Exterior
While the Regal's styling is definitely understated, the sedan has clean lines and a nice stance. The rear-quarter view is one of its best angles, and the car has one of the most stylish trunk lids around. Exterior features include:
  • Standard 18-inch aluminum wheels
  • Available 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels
  • Available sunroof
Interior
The five-seat cabin utilizes premium materials, and there is an optional navigation system. The Regal has a sizable trunk that measures 14.2 cubic feet, and there is a wide opening to both the cargo area and into the cabin when the split backseat is folded. Interior features include:
  • Standard leather upholstery
  • Standard heated front seats
  • Standard power driver's seat
  • Standard Bluetooth connectivity
  • Standard satellite radio
  • Optional Harman Kardon stereo
Under the Hood
The Regal's base engine is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that makes 182 horsepower. Buyers looking for more power can select the optional turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that's rated at 220 hp. The engines work with a six-speed automatic transmission to power the front wheels, and sedans with the turbo engine also offer a six-speed manual gearbox. Mechanical features include:
  • Available Interactive Drive Control System equips the car with an adaptive suspension that automatically tailors itself to road conditions and driver behavior
  • IDCS includes three modes — Normal, Tour and Sport — that vary the response of the suspension, gas pedal, automatic transmission and steering system
Safety
Safety features include:
  • Standard antilock brakes
  • Standard electronic stability system
  • Standard traction control
  • Standard side-impact airbags for the front seats
  • Standard side curtain airbags
  • Optional backseat side-impact airbags
Regal GS
A higher-performance version of the turbocharged Regal, the GS benefits from higher turbo boost and reduced exhaust backpressure to generate 270 hp and 295 pounds-feet of torque. The power runs through a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic to the front wheels, and Buick says the GS' front suspension has specialized struts to mitigate torque steer. The front and rear shocks are both adaptive, with driver-changeable settings to alter their stiffness as well as power-steering assist. Drivers can choose from three settings — Standard, Sport and GS Mode — by using dashboard controls.
Visual cues include a lower ride height, deeper bumpers, faux hood vents and 19-inch alloy wheels. Twenty-inch wheels with summer tires are optional. Inside, the GS has a flat-bottom steering wheel, metal pedals and unique leather seats with larger side bolsters.Back to top
Regal eAssist
The Regal eAssist combines a 2.4-liter four-cylinder and a six-speed automatic transmission with a 15-hp electric motor to provide more acceleration. The motor uses power from a lithium-ion battery, which draws a charge off regenerative braking. The engine shuts off at a stop and during deceleration, helping render an EPA-rating of 25/36 mpg city/highway.
The lithium-ion battery pack sits behind the rear seat, cutting trunk volume, as the case is in many hybrid sedans. Folding rear seats are standard, but the battery pack blocks the passenger-side opening.
Other changes include unique 17-inch light-alloy wheels with low-rolling-resistance tires, an air-conditioning system with a more efficient fuel-economy mode, an Eco gauge in the instrument cluster and a screen that shows hybrid-system energy flow. More detail
